Blue Mountains Small Business Guide: Getting Found on Google Maps

When locals and visitors search "café Leura", "electrician near me" or "gift shop Blackheath", the first thing they usually see is a map with three businesses on it. Getting into those three spots is one of the best free things a local business can do.

The tool behind it is a Google Business Profile. It's free, and you manage it yourself.

Step 1: Claim your profile

Search for your business name on Google Maps. If it's already there, choose "Own this business?" to claim it. If not, add it. Google will ask you to verify that you're the owner, often by video, phone or a postcard. Do it straight away, because an unverified profile barely shows.

Step 2: Fill in everything

Google favours complete profiles. Make sure you have:

  • The right category. Pick the one that best describes what you do, such as "Art gallery" rather than just "Store", and add secondary categories.
  • Accurate hours, including public holidays. Nothing loses a customer faster than turning up to a locked door.
  • Your address or service area. If you visit customers, say which suburbs: Katoomba, Leura, Springwood, Penrith and so on.
  • Your website and phone number.
  • A short description in plain words that says what you do and where.

Step 3: Add real photos

Add your shopfront (so people recognise it from the street), inside, your products and you. Businesses with good photos get far more clicks. Add a new one every month or two.

Step 4: Ask for reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest factors in who appears first. After a happy job or sale, ask: "Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review?" Google gives you a short link you can text or email. Reply to every review, thanking good ones and answering poor ones calmly. Future customers read your replies.

Step 5: Keep it alive

  • Post updates such as events, new stock and seasonal hours. They appear on your profile.
  • Answer questions people ask on your profile.
  • Keep your details the same everywhere. Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly on your website, Facebook and directories.

Make your website back it up

Your website should mention the towns you serve and the services you offer, in plain words, with your address and phone number in the footer. Google cross-checks your profile against your website.
